Bed of roses with spines

Image

In the preface of my book Musika Maestro wrote the lieutenant governor of Bonaire, Master in law mister Richard hart that the showbiz life is not always a bed of roses. He wished me every success with the book.

Although I knew it, now I have to say indeed it is absolutely not a bed of roses. Even in the smallest corner can happen unexpected activities like this one.

In december 2011 I have release the cd-album Kunuku. It was in Christmas days so I was also busy with ordering some snacks. A person should bring my order. But would stay a surprise who the person was. And I was curious. A couple of days later got a phone call. My order has arrived and I could pick it up in the neighborhood. I went to that house and the person was someone I knew in Curaçao but have not seen for many many years. He was a cameraman of the television station on the island. He told me he was making television programs for online streaming and I told him about my new released album. Well, he said in no time he can sell a couple of the cd. I gave him a couple. Later he asked for a dvd with one of my live performances for a television program. I could use it for one of his programs. So far so good. But months going by without hearing something of this guy. I started to make telephone calls and e-mails without results. I went to that house by walk, by car and by bike but no one at home. It is by now June 3th, 2013, one and a half year ago. Maybe a miracle will happen. But that hope was stored away in a lit. That action seems to me a presentation of arrogance, disrespect and abuse. In this case is it a bed of roses with spines! But after this publication I got my things back. Too bad it had to go in a such way.

Bonaire’s constitutional structure, the self-determination referendum and the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories of the United Nations.

Nose

Was it a mistake or one plays the stupid?

If “direct ties” with The Netherlands, as it is now, is freely determined by the people of Bonaire and want it to stay the way it is right now than it is a freely choice of the population. It can also be considered a way of implementing the right of self-determination. The same goes for claiming the right to freely make a choice by means of a self-determination referendum.

In this connection it’s not a bad idea to take a helicopter view on the route that led to the magical date: 10-10-10.

According to General Assembly resolution 1541 (XV) of 1961, there are three ways in which a Non-Self-Governing Territory can exercise self-determination and reach a full measure of self-government:

  1. By free association with the administering Power or another independent State as a result of a free and voluntary choice by the people of the Territory expressed through an informed and democratic process;

  2. By integrating with the administering Power or another independent State on the basis of complete equality between the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territory and those of the Independent State;

  3. By becoming independent.

The intergration of Bonaire does not met these conditions. Despite that, Mr. Ramonsito Booi on completion of a mini round table conference in The Hague on 11 October 2006 signed a final agreement which states that the islands of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius will get a status as a public body of The Netherlands. This final agreement was thereafter supported by a large majority of the Second Chamber, the States of the Netherlands Antilles and the island councils of Bonaire, St Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.

From that moment has one person made a decision knowing or without realizing that the people first had to be committed at that point. A few years later began the preparations to organize a self-determination. Unfortunately it has failed. Twice!

With 10-10-10 in sight, the Deputy of Political Relations, Mr. J.E. Abraham, on behalf of the island territory of Bonaire signed with The Netherlands an administrative agreement dated april 22, 2010 in which is written that the population of Bonaire has the right to self-determination and Bonaire agrees that the State of the Netherlands is recognized as the legal successor of the country Netherlands Antilles. With Bonaire will be consulted on future ownership.

Also in this document is no mention that the people first must be consulted by means of a referendum.

In either case, what Booi and Abraham have signed, is no mention that also is agreed that on the transition date 10-10-10 in addition to retaining the right to self-determination Bonaire also will be added on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories of the United Nations. How is this possible?

The Netherlands as a member of the United Nations should know the rules. Or one plays here the stupid?

Even if Booi and Abraham would forgot it, The Netherlands based on the general principle of good-neighbourliness had to draw the attention of these two gentlemen on these obligations or in another case they should reflect The Netherlands on its obligations.

Based on the resolutions of the United Nations, nor the agreement of 11 October 2006 nor the other one of 22 April 2010 has a valid meaning that seriously indicates the content of the result of the referendum held in 2004 being “direct ties” with Netherlands.
At least
if The Netherlands as a serious member of United Nations, has respect for the resolutions which have been ratified also by The Netherlands and has accepted as a sacred trust the obligation to promote to the utmost, within the system of international peace and security established by the present Charter, the well-being of the inhabitants of these territories, and, to this end:

to ensure, with due respect for the culture of the peoples concerned, their political, economic, social, and educational advancement, their just treatment, and their protection against abuses;

to develop self-government, to take due account of the political aspirations of the peoples, and to assist them in the progressive development of their free political institutions, according to the particular circumstances of each territory and its peoples and their varying stages of advancement;

to further international peace and security;

to promote constructive measures of development, to encourage research, and to co-operate with one another and, when and where appropriate, with specialized international bodies with a view to the practical achievement of the social, economic, and scientific purposes set forth in this Article; and

to transmit regularly to the Secretary-General for information purposes, subject to such limitation as security and constitutional considerations may require, statistical and other information of a technical nature relating to economic, social, and educational conditions in the territories for which they are respectively responsible other than those territories to which Chapters XII and XIII apply.

The Netherlands is illegally occupying these island in the Caribbean.

It is up to authorities on the island to get Bonaire on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories of the United Nations. It is the responsibility of the public representation on Bonaire and The Netherlands as the governing power to work closely together with the Committee of 24 of the United Nations on a solution.

I was born and bret on Bonaire but live for many years in The Netherlands. So I am nothing more than an observer.

  1. Door vrije associatie met de besturende mogendheden of een andere onafhankelijke staat als resultaat van een vrije en vrijwillige keuze, door de mensen van het Gebied uitgedrukt via een geïnformeerd en democratisch proces;

  2. Door te integreren met de besturende mogendheid of een andere onafhankelijke staat op basis van volledige gelijkheid tussen de mensen van het niet-zelfbesturend gebied en die van de onafhankelijke staat;

Of speelt men hier de domme?

a. de politieke, economische en sociale vooruitgang van deze volken, alsmede hun vooruitgang op het gebied van het onderwijs, hun rechtvaardige behandeling en hun bescherming tegen misbruiken, te verzekeren, met inachtneming van de nodige eerbied voor hun cultuur;

b. zelfbestuur te ontwikkelen, terdege rekening te houden met de politieke aspiraties van de volken en hen bij te staan bij de progressieve ontwikkeling van hun vrije politieke instellingen, overeenkomstig de bijzondere omstandigheden van elk gebied en zijn bevolking en hun verschillende stadia van ontwikkeling;

c. de internationale vrede en veiligheid te bevorderen;

KUNUKU, the cd album of William Anthony. © 2011

The title refers to the song Dios Y Ami Na Playa Grandi; an adaptation of the song Deus E Eu No Sertão, written by the Brazilian Victor Chaves.

The music of those unforgettable songs, written by leading Antillian composers in the 1960s, is a mix of electronic and acoustic instruments. To mention the lively guitar play in the adventurous Piskadó composed by Rudy Plaate and the beautiful orchestration in Ansiedad of José Enrique “Chelique” Sarabia, simulating a dynamic Philharmonic Orchestra.

On the CD are two Simadan songs of Bonaire; Remailo and Mi Deseo. One of the best-known songs sung in the KUNUKU is Mi Deseo. It was forgotten and nearly lost, but now is modified and made accessible. In the track Remailo we can hear the very creative sample of the vocals of the choir Kanta Orchidia from Bonaire also the juicy rhythms of a number of traditional instruments and plain hand-clapping.

Hits from the ‘ 60s, such as the fabulous wals Pa Semper Uni of Rafael Gravenhorst, the sentimental bolero Fo’i Dia M’a Mirabo of Padú del Caribe and the pleasant holadijee holadio Curaçao polka Bam Bam sound cheerful on the album. In short, your special attention for songs that are not allowed to be forgotten.

The CD production Kunuku is made possible by the Prins Bernhard cultuurfonds Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

William Anthony has previously released a number of Antillian unknown or forgotten songs: Sobre Las Alas Del Viento – Corsen (sheet music from the book “Poesias” the Corsen) on CD Album Esta Dushi (2010), Bon Aña (J. Palm) CD Album Tesoro (2009), Riba Awa (v.d. Pavert/Palm) CD single Nos Ta Canta (2007) both from the song book Nos Ta Canta, Schoon is de West and Snijderlied – CD single Music from Bonaire (1998), restored the composition Esta Dushi of Pedro Pablo Medardo de Marchena on the eponymous CD Album (2010) and many more.

Esta Dushi

THE STORY BEHIND “Esta Dushi”:

During the World War years of 1940-1945 wrote Pedro Pablo Medardo de Marchena the lyrics of this song in captivity in the camp on Bonaire. In that concentration camp, he wrote a dozen or more lyrics about the physical beauty and to be in romantic love with an unattainable woman. The lyrics held a plea in favor of the Papiamento against the exclusively use of Spanish and English in the ‘tophit’. The written on silver paper from cigarette boxes collection was entirely unknown until they discussed them and is private kept on Bonaire. ‘Esta dushi’ is one of his songs and was made famous as ‘Bula waya’ by the Puerto Rican singer Daniel Santos. It goes about his desire to jump over the fence of the camp and get acquainted with the beautiful woman he regularly saw walking at the other side of the fence. The melodie is of the song “Ay mi a subi un ceru” in the song book ‘Nos ta Canta”. This piece of history is available for download at AmazonMP3 (USA), iTunes Store and through the various download portals worldwide.

Antilliaanse liederen van weleer

ImageNos Ta Canta foto buki

Het is Music from Bonaire geworden. It’s a hell of job!

Years ago when I moved to the Netherlands I’ve been brought contact with Oscar Harris. He gave me some backing tapes.They were covers of well-known songs. I participated in talent shows and had a gig here and there singing those songs. Often people said that we have on the islands of the Netherlands Antilles such wonderful music and songs and asked why I don’t use them. Later in the Netherlands-Antilles-Aruba Friends Society we started brainstorming about Antillean songs of the past. The idea to produce a CD with some songs of a historical significance was born. It became Music from Bonaire which the realization has been made possible through the generous support of the Bonairian business center, released on Februari, 23th, 1998. It was warmly received. And as Jac Goderie has formulated it in his Live on Radio 2 , AVRO “Weekend Cafe” radio program on May, 3th 1998, I got interested into that genre. The search for more songs from the past has started. Meanwhile I have recorded some of them. It seemed that the source has come to an end. The last album in that genre was Kunuku that I produced in 2011 with the support of Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The end of independent production of my CDs would be Grandi Grandi Grandi released in December 2012. But to my surprise I found in the library of the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) the songbook Bam Canta with songs from the period before 1944. It’s a very good question if I will do anything with it. It’s a hell of job!

THE STORY BEHIND Jozef

Long time ago there were two Dutch school teachers on Curaçao; Ton Surbach and Teun Schram. They played the gitar and sing everywhere they could as “The Singing Teachers”. Together they modified the song about this lady asking Jozef: “Oh Jozef Jozef when are we going to get married. We have been engaged for more than 20 years. I can’t wait any longer. My hair is grey, my teeth falling out.” The original is written by Chan Chaplin the music and Jack Bess the lyrics. Check it out at iTunes Store or AmazonMP3!!!!

WEALTH of BONAIRE

Bonaire is a Caribbean island that since October 10th, 2010 is illegally owned by the Netherlands, and lies in the southern Caribbean near Aruba and Curacao.
Tourism is the main economy of the island, which offers an array of highly-rated scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities in reefs that are ecologically protected by law and only minutes away from the shoreline.

Nature on Bonaire is worth more than $ 100 million annually. That is the outcome of an examination of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to the economic value of nature on Bonaire.
In the documentary ‘ the wealth of Bonaire ‘ unveils presenter Yvon Jaspers the outcome of this examination.
